We will offer you a full immediate refund if you need the flooring within a few days and we will offer a delayed delivery, which should be within 2 weeks with the next re-stocking.

Basics of Laying Parquet Flooring

Most of our clients of parquet flooring blocks are experienced fitters hired as contractors for a project in Milton Keynes. But sometimes the management of the project is partly held by the property owner, and if the case is like this, here’s a guide to get you started with the basics:

Preparation

  • Subfloor Inspection: Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. It should be free of any moisture or debris. A moisture barrier might be necessary for concrete subfloors.
  • Acclimation: Allow your parquet flooring to acclimate in the room where it will be installed. This helps the wood adjust to the room’s temperature and humidity, minimising expansion or contraction after installation.

Tools and Materials

  • Gather essential tools such as a tape measure, saw, hammer, nails or glue, spacers, and a mallet. You’ll also need an underlay or moisture barrier if required.

Layout

  • Plan Your Pattern: Decide on the parquet pattern you want, such as herringbone, chevron, or basketweave. Planning helps ensure symmetry and alignment.
  • Start Line: Use a chalk line to mark a starting line along the longest wall. This ensures that your first row of the parquet is straight and aligned.

Installation

  • Begin Laying: Start laying the parquet from the starting line. Follow the appropriate installation method depending on the type of parquet (glue-down, nail-down, or floating).
  • Fit and Secure: For glue-down parquet, apply adhesive to the subfloor and lay the planks, pressing them into place. For nail-down, secure the planks with nails or staples. For floating floors, interlock the planks as per the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Use Spacers: Place spacers along the walls to maintain an expansion gap. This gap allows for the natural expansion and contraction of the wood.

Cutting

  • Fit the Edges: Cut planks to fit along the edges and corners. Use a saw to make precise cuts, ensuring a snug fit.

Finishing Touches

  • Trim and Moulding: Once the flooring is installed, add trim and moulding to cover the expansion gap and give the room a polished look.
  • Clean Up: Remove any excess adhesive and clean the floor according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow the floor to settle before moving furniture back in.

Maintenance

  • Regular Care: Maintain your parquet floor with regular cleaning and periodic refinishing to keep it looking its best. Avoid excessive moisture and use protective pads under furniture to prevent scratches.

New or Reclaimed Blocks?

Oak parquet flooring like any other wooden product is sensitive to moisture and therefore it is of great importance to be stored in dry places until used. Such places are supplier's warehouses, but cannot be garages, sheds, gardens, lofts or other places where people in Milton Keynes would normally store things they do not need any more.

This real-life example of how thousands of pounds can be wasted in fitting "free reclaimed blocks from my uncle's house" or "the cheap oak blocks I bid on eBay", can, later on, show how they can buckle up or crack, just weeks after the floor installation.

Let's not forget as well that sanding parquet blocks of different heights, will take much more consumables and time than finishing new blocks. This is just one example, showing why fitting reclaimed blocks will be much more expensive than new blocks.
