New or Reclaimed Blocks?

Oak parquet flooring like any other wooden product is sensitive to moisture and therefore it is of great importance to be stored in dry places until used. Such places are supplier's warehouses, but cannot be garages, sheds, gardens, lofts or other places where people in Durham would normally store things they do not need any more.

This real-life example of how thousands of pounds can be wasted in fitting "free reclaimed blocks from my uncle's house" or "the cheap oak blocks I bid on eBay", can, later on, show how they can buckle up or crack, just weeks after the floor installation.

Let's not forget as well that sanding parquet blocks of different heights, will take much more consumables and time than finishing new blocks. This is just one example, showing why fitting reclaimed blocks will be much more expensive than new blocks.

Tips on Laying Parquet Flooring

Many clients of ours have experienced floor fitters in Durham . However, some try to manage their own projects and lack some experience. Here are some major points that should be addressed with parquet flooring installations.

  • Parquet blocks require a good subfloor level. If your subfloor is concrete and uneven, do not resolve it with the application of a self-levelling compound, it is a common mistake.
  • Always apply a liquid DPM (damp proof membrane) to concrete subfloors to prevent moisture issues.
  • Allow parquet blocks to acclimatise to the room temperature if installing in cold weather.
  • Use only manufacturer recommended adhesive for the subfloor type. Consult adhesive specs before purchasing.
  • Choose a high quality underlayment for sound insulation and added stability.
  • Carefully follow all manufacturer instructions for subfloor preparation and installation.
  • Tap blocks gently into place with a rubber mallet rather than forcing them.
  • Allow adhesive to fully cure before sanding or finishing parquet flooring. Follow all manufacturer curing times.
  • Use only manufacturer recommended finishes and apply the proper number of coats.
  • Clean parquet flooring regularly with a damp mop and approved cleaner. Avoid excessive moisture.
