These are 70x230mm, 70x280mm and 70x350mm, all with 20mm thickness of the block. Each pack contains an equal number of blocks of left and right-oriented fitting - ideal for the installation of the parquet flooring in a herringbone pattern. The lower-positioned tongue-and-groove provides approx 12mm of sandable depth, meaning a longer life for your floors.
Basics of Laying Parquet Flooring
Most of our clients of parquet flooring blocks are experienced fitters hired as contractors for a project in Derby
. But sometimes the management of the project is partly held by the property owner, and if the case is like this, here’s a guide to get you started with the basics:
Preparation
- Subfloor Inspection: Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. It should be free of any moisture or debris. A moisture barrier might be necessary for concrete subfloors.
- Acclimation: Allow your parquet flooring to acclimate in the room where it will be installed. This helps the wood adjust to the room’s temperature and humidity, minimising expansion or contraction after installation.
Tools and Materials
- Gather essential tools such as a tape measure, saw, hammer, nails or glue, spacers, and a mallet. You’ll also need an underlay or moisture barrier if required.
Layout
- Plan Your Pattern: Decide on the parquet pattern you want, such as herringbone, chevron, or basketweave. Planning helps ensure symmetry and alignment.
- Start Line: Use a chalk line to mark a starting line along the longest wall. This ensures that your first row of the parquet is straight and aligned.
Installation
- Begin Laying: Start laying the parquet from the starting line. Follow the appropriate installation method depending on the type of parquet (glue-down, nail-down, or floating).
- Fit and Secure: For glue-down parquet, apply adhesive to the subfloor and lay the planks, pressing them into place. For nail-down, secure the planks with nails or staples. For floating floors, interlock the planks as per the manufacturer's instructions.
- Use Spacers: Place spacers along the walls to maintain an expansion gap. This gap allows for the natural expansion and contraction of the wood.
Cutting
- Fit the Edges: Cut planks to fit along the edges and corners. Use a saw to make precise cuts, ensuring a snug fit.
Finishing Touches
- Trim and Moulding: Once the flooring is installed, add trim and moulding to cover the expansion gap and give the room a polished look.
- Clean Up: Remove any excess adhesive and clean the floor according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow the floor to settle before moving furniture back in.
Maintenance
- Regular Care: Maintain your parquet floor with regular cleaning and periodic refinishing to keep it looking its best. Avoid excessive moisture and use protective pads under furniture to prevent scratches.
Our Parquet Floor Grading System
- Rustic Grade Parquet Blocks - rich, vivid character allowing random size and form of knots and colour variation between the blocks;
- Natural Grade Parquet Blocks - more calm, natural feeling of the timber, allowing limited sized knots of up to 5 mm and almost no colour variation between the blocks;
- Prime Grade Parquet Blocks - clean oak timber without colour variation between the blocks; knots of 1 mm may appear randomly on 1 of 5 blocks.

Reclaimed or New Parquet Blocks?
Parquet blocks are timber products and as such are sensitive to moisture. Storage of flooring should be done in purpose-built warehouses, not in garages, sheds, gardens, lofts or other places where people in Derby
would normally store things they do not need any more.
This fact from life is a typical example of how thousands of pounds can be wasted in the installation of reclaimed blocks, which will buckle or crack weeks after the installation.
So, yes - the right advice does not go for reclaimed blocks unless you are certain how you do it.
