Oak Parquet Maintenance: Keeping Your Floor in Excellent Condition

Oak parquet floors last for generations when maintained correctly. The maintenance requirements for parquet are essentially the same as for any oak wood floor, but the larger number of block-to-block joints in a herringbone pattern creates specific considerations around moisture management that straight-run plank floors do not have to the same degree. This guide covers the practical maintenance routine for both oiled and lacquered parquet.

Daily and Weekly Cleaning

The priority for daily parquet care is keeping grit off the floor. Each small block in a herringbone pattern represents many individual grain directions and many fine joints, and grit ground between blocks over time works its way into these joints and can cause localised wear. Door mats at every external entry are the most effective preventive measure.

For regular cleaning, a microfibre flat mop is the right tool. Use it dry for dust removal, or lightly damp with the appropriate cleaner for more thorough cleaning. For oiled parquet, Osmo Wash and Care diluted 1:20 in water provides both cleaning and incremental oil maintenance. For lacquered parquet, Bona Cleaner at the recommended dilution is the appropriate product. In both cases, the mop should be damp rather than wet; excess moisture at the many block joints in parquet can penetrate over time.

Protecting Parquet Joints

The joints between parquet blocks are the most vulnerable areas of the floor. Water penetrating through joints can cause the wood to swell, displace blocks, or cause the adhesive beneath to fail over time. Never use steam mops on parquet; the high-temperature moisture they produce is particularly effective at penetrating block joints. Wipe spills immediately, and avoid overly wet mopping.

In kitchen areas adjacent to parquet, or where parquet runs close to a bathroom threshold, apply a bead of colour-matched silicone at any expansion gap near water sources. This provides a flexible seal against water ingress at the most vulnerable points while allowing the floor to move seasonally.

Annual Oil Maintenance for Oiled Parquet

Oiled parquet benefits from an annual maintenance coat of Osmo Polyx Oil or the appropriate maintenance oil for the finish brand. Apply a thin coat across the whole floor using a Hard Wax Oil Applicator or microfibre cloth, working in the direction that covers all block orientations systematically. Allow to dry for 12 hours. This annual treatment keeps the oil protection consistent across the floor and prevents the gradual depletion that leads to grey, dry-looking blocks in traffic areas.

The maintenance effort required is proportionate to this quality, but it is not substantial when approached systematically rather than reactively.
