The finish applied to oak parquet blocks affects the floor's appearance, its performance under use, and how it ages over time. Oak parquet is typically finished in one of three ways: hardwax oil, lacquer, or a combination of a base oil stain with an oil topcoat. Each produces a different result and has different maintenance requirements. Hardwax Oil Finishes for Oak Parquet

Osmo Polyx Oil is the most widely used finish for site-finished oak parquet blocks in the UK. Applied in two thin coats to a freshly sanded herringbone floor, it produces a natural, open-grained surface where the texture of the oak remains tactile and the pattern is enhanced by the oil's interaction with the wood's natural colour. The result is particularly suitable for period properties and for settings where a traditional, non-plastic look is important.

Rubio Monocoat is an alternative that is particularly popular for contemporary parquet projects where a more precise colour tone is needed. Its single-coat application is efficient on the large surface areas that characterise parquet floors, and the coloured variants allow interesting effects including smoked oak and warm grey-brown tones that work well in contemporary settings.

The maintenance advantage of oil on parquet is significant. Individual blocks that are scratched or stained can be spot-treated with fresh oil without needing to refinish the whole floor. On a large herringbone floor, this ability to address localised damage practically is a substantial long-term benefit.

Lacquer Finishes for Oak Parquet

Bona Traffic HD in extra-matt is the most specified lacquer for oak parquet in the UK professional market. It provides excellent abrasion resistance and is appropriate for hallways, commercial buildings and any high-traffic area where oil's maintenance requirement is not practical. The film-forming lacquer seals the surface completely, making it easy to clean and maintain without periodic re-oiling.

Loba 2K Invisible is preferred for very light-coloured oak parquet where even the slight warmth of Bona Traffic HD would affect the tone. Its exceptional colour neutrality preserves the very pale, chalky quality of white-oiled or lye-treated oak parquet without introducing any amber cast.

Pre-Finished Engineered Parquet

Many engineered oak parquet products are available pre-finished with factory-applied UV oil or UV lacquer. Factory finishes are applied under UV light at high temperatures, producing a harder and more consistent initial finish than most site applications. Pre-finished engineered parquet can be walked on immediately after installation without waiting for site finish to dry and cure, which is a significant practical advantage.
